Using Light Therapy for Depression

from:

Depression is amongst one of the disorders that affect a lot of people. But with the progress in the studies of modern medicine have produced several treatments for it. Each treatment is unique and offers various progressions for an individual and each have proven success in curing it. Light therapy is one of the technologies that modern science has gone to in terms of curing certain diseases and disorders with lesser side effects. Studies have shown that various types of light therapy have beneficial effects to human and may even cure some of human’s medical dilemmas.

One such disorder in which the use of light therapy has been proven to have successful results is depression, but finding out the right type of treatment that works best is difficult, especially with one that is new to the market such as light therapy for depression. But there are many medical conditions similar to depression, and medications can cause the symptoms of depression--fatigue, loss of pleasure, or sadness. And for a fact depression will not leave until the actual problem is not only identified but treated correctly.

Conventional methods for treating depression include psychotherapy, electroconvulsive or ECT therapy and using antidepressant drugs. Medical field recognizes the fact that choosing the right kind of treatment largely depends upon the severity and cause of depression. Both holistic practitioners and traditional medical physicians agree that for extremely serious depressions, light therapy for depression should be considered as a complementary treatment as compared to the conventional ones. Complementary conditions that are considered acceptable for light therapy for depression are the seasonal depression and seasonal affective disorders but not for major or chronic depressions such as manic depression or manor depressive disorders. But in the case of seasonal affective disorder, the use of light therapy results in excellent outcomes.

In other depression symptoms, light therapy has also been proven to help improve its condition such as early morning insomnia, productivity enhancement, night-owl insomnia, jet lag, late-shift drowsiness, bulimia, lupus, non-seasonal depression, or even prolonged menstrual cycles. Others also include light therapy for anxiety, light on winter darkness, light therapy for bipolar and light therapy for depression during pregnancy.

One successful study on the use of light therapy for depression conducted in Canada revealed that using light therapy for treating depression is just as effective as using medications. Plus, it is also considered as a safe treatment for it offers no harmful side effects. And not only is it effective, it is cheaper than traditional medication and treatments.

Almost all of antidepressant treatments, except lithium, have the ability to make the condition of bipolar disorder much worse than without them, forcing an increase of subtle "manic side" symptoms. Application of light therapy for winter depression such as SAD, originally started out with early morning treatments. Recent studies have revealed however that no matter when the treatment is given – may it be night or day – give out good results. But how this treats depression is still unknown and not well-established.
