The Power of Intense Pulse Light Therapy
from:The Intense Pulse Light Therapy or intense pulse phototherapy (also called as photo laser, computer controlled light therapy, light laser and many more) is among the latest procedures for light therapy. This is pioneered by Dr. Patrick Bitter Jr. which is considered a new light therapy that emits high intensity pulses of light to penetrate the human skin for skin disorders. This is used for the removal of facial wrinkles, old age or “liver” spots, freckles, tattoos, skin and facial hair and other skin disorders.
The intense pulse light therapy used for rosacea is used by those individuals who cannot stand the traditional lasers. And unlike those treatments the use lasers, this system emits many colors compared to laser which has only one color. That is why it can also be referred to as an intense pulse color therapy.
The procedure of this therapy begins with the topical anesthetic application, wherein once the numbing has taken effect in the treatment area, an application of cold and soothing gel will then follow. After that, a pyramid or glass prism is placed over the area. A non-aggressive pulse or intense flash of light is then flashed through the prism towards the treatment area. This is so to keep the skin undamaged for further treatments.
There are different types of intense pulse light box or machines that are designed for different levels of repairs and penetration for the Intense Pulse Light Therapy:
• PhotoDerm VL – This is a device that directs the light pulses at the spider and varicose veins, in addition to vascular birth marks. The main target is the blood’s hemoglobin for vascular lesions.
• PhotoDerm PL – This is a machine that directs the light pulses at age spots, freckles, different types of discoloration and flat pigmented birthmarks. The target area of this type of intense pulse light is the melanin in the epidermis for pigmented lesions.
• PhotoDerm HR an EpiLight – This device directs the light pulses at the melanin in the hair shaft, traveling to the follicle, heating and destroying it for hair removal.
Not everybody is safe to use this kind of treatment. Insulin-dependent diabetics are not suited for this kind of therapy due to risk of wound-healing and infection problems. Anyone who uses blood thinners such as Coumadin, Heparin or aspirin should discontinue the use of such before undergoing treatment. Also, those who use any herbal remedies that are anti-coagulant such as garlic, ginger, cayenne, papaya, gingko biloba, Vitamin E and selenium, should have a 10-discontinued use of such before treatment.
There are always risks when using this kind of treatment, as well as with other medical procedures, whether natural or traditional. With the use of Intense Pulse Light therapy, blistering and slight bleeding is a possibility. The lightening or darkening of certain areas is also a possibility that may occur after the treatment and this usually takes 12 months before the normal skin tone will resurface. And in very rare situations, scarring may also occur. But this is just a rare case.
